  • 1.5-litre engine used as a generator
  • Electricity then used to power motors
  • Comes with one-pedal driving
  • On sale in the summer

The Nissan Qashqai is getting a hybrid engine option later this year called the ‘e-Power’.

This alternative to the Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga will be the first Nissan in Europe to be sold with the e-Power hybrid system.

New Nissan Qashqai e-Power engine and batteries

The new Nissan Qashqai e-Power combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a 140kW electric motor. This produces 188hp and Nissan claims it will return 53mpg.

The petrol engine in the e-Power acts solely as a generator for the batteries and electric motor, and therefore it never directly drives the wheels.

This means you get the driving experience of an electric car, without the need to plug it in.

The Qashqai e-Power also offers one-pedal driving, similar to that offered in the Nissan Leaf. It uses regenerative braking to put charge back into the battery when you lift off the accelerator, while also slowing the car down.

New Nissan Qashqai e-Power price and release date

The new Nissan Qashqai e-Power is due to go on sale in the UK in the Summer of 2022.

Prices haven’t been revealed yet, however you can expect this to sit at the top of the Qashqai range. A starting price north of £35,000 is a safe bet.

Nissan Qashqai Hybrid design and interior

The new Nissan Qashqai Hybrid looks the same as the normal Qashqai, with only a few e-Power badges to set it apart.

This means you get a smart looking family SUV with an angular design, it just doesn’t stand out as much as a Peugeot 3008.

It’s a similar story inside, where you’ll find a generous amount of equipment and decent build quality. You get an eight-inch touchscreen as standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the overall design is a huge improvement over its predecessor.
