If practicality and space are your main priorities for a new car, you can’t go wrong with an MPV. They have plenty of room for growing families while also offering impressive flexibility, comfort and – in some cases – they are good to drive too.
1. Volkswagen Touran

The Volkswagen Touran is spacious and comes with a smart, flexible interior. The rearmost pair of seats is best suited for children, but when they’re not needed, they can be folded away to create a five-seat MPV with a big boot.
2. SEAT Alhambra
The SEAT Alhambra is built on the same backbone as the VW Sharan and, as such, inherits many of that car’s pros. These include a spacious cabin capable of accommodating seven adults, as well as a grocery shop-friendly boot. It’s worthy… just a bit dull.
3. Renault Grand Scenic
If you’re after an MPV with attention-grabbing looks, check out the Renault Grand Scenic. It comes stacked with safety features and comes with economical engines. The cabin feels a bit cheap, though.
4. Volkswagen Sharan
The Volkswagen Sharan is exactly what you want from a big, family-accommodating MPV. It’s a seven-seater that can actually take seven adults in the style of a traditional people carrier. The boot is also big enough for your weekly shop, even with every seat up.
5. Ford S-Max
The Ford S-Max is one of the better-looking MPVs out there, and its sharp exterior is complemented by being quite fun to drive, too. It’s comfortable and well-equipped though it feels a bit cheaper inside than some MPVs.
6. Ford Galaxy
The Ford Galaxy is one of the biggest and most practical MPVs. Unlike most of the alternatives, it has seven full-sized seats, all of which are comfy and supportive. It’s got a lot of safety kit, too but its interior is drab and uninspiring.
7. Citroen Berlingo

The Citroen Berlingo majors on space and practicality, but it’s comfortable too. The infotainment system no more than average and the most flexible seating options is only available on top spec models.
8. BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer
If you need seven seats but also value a premium interior then the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer offers both. However, its sixth and seventh seats are best reserved for children.
