The Renault Arkana is finally here. It is Renault’s first hybrid SUV and is based on the same underpinnings as the smaller Clio and Captur. The Arkana’s coupe-like rear styling is more commonly seen in pricier German SUVs such as the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, but this ever-growing market is set to feature more models soon, including the upcoming Volkswagen Taigo.

2021 Renault Arkana design

The Renault Arkana combines sleek design with the added benefit of the raised ride height of an SUV. The Arkana’s sloping rear roofline and relatively small side windows make it looks more rakish than your average SUV – especially from the side – while the front and rear skid plates and chunky black wheel arch protectors make sure it looks tougher than a standard family hatchback.

The front grille features a large Renault logo in the centre and is flanked by a set of C-shaped LED headlights – similar to those you get on the new Renault Captur and Renault Megane. This theme is carried through to the rear where you’ll spot further C-shaped lighting with a strip that extends over the whole width of the tailgate.

The all-new Arkana is available in Iconic, S Edition and R.S. Line trims. The latter includes what Renault refers to as a ‘Formula One-inspired’ aerodynamic front blade, it also features black diamond-cut R.S. Line alloy wheels. An R.S. Line badge is added to the wing trims while the rear sports a chromed dual exhaust and a darker skid plate.

Sportier R.S. Line models get these dual chrome exhaust tips

A contrasting black roof is optional on S Edition and R.S. Line models. Exterior colours on offer include Glacier White, Pearl White, Zanzibar Blue, Flame Red, Metallic Black, and Metallic Grey. Valencia Orange (shown above) is reserved for R.S. Line models.

2021 Renault Arkana interior

Red trim comes as standard in R.S. Line models

The Renault Arkana’s interior is laid out in a similar way to the cabins in the Renault Zoe and Clio. There’s a pronounced centre console with three heating and ventilation controls ahead of the gear selector, and a digital driver’s display behind the steering wheel.

Top-spec cars get 10.2- and 9.3-inch screens

The touchscreen infotainment system measures 7.0-inches on the Iconic trim and 9.3-inches (in portrait layout) on the two upper trims. The driver display, meanwhile, uses either a 4.2-inch, 7.0-inch or 10.2-inch screen, depending on the model you pick.

Separating R.S. Line models from the standard car is a carbon-finish dashboard and door lining and red trim running along the top of the dashboard. Further upgrades include red stitching on the leather steering wheel as well as the leather and suede-effect upholstery and a red strip on the seat belts. The Renault Arkana has 513-litres of boot space, though in E-Tech Hybrid models this drops to 480-litres, due to the extra space required for the battery.

2021 Renault Arkana engine

The Arkana will come with a choice of hybrid engines

The Renault Arkana is available with two engine options. The E-Tech Hybrid combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, offering a combined 145hp. It comes fitted with a small capacity 1.2kWh battery and the system prioritises all-electric running unless full power is required. The battery can recharge itself under deceleration and braking. Renault claims it’ll return up to 57.6mpg.

All models come with an automatic gearbox as standard

The TCe 140 model consists of a 1.3-litre engine combined with a mild-hybrid system and 12-volt starter generator. It offers 140hp and a combined fuel consumption figure of 48.7mpg. It’s the quicker of the two Arkana models, getting to 60mph from rest in less than 9.8-seconds. All models are fitted with automatic gearboxes as standard.
