2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R prices revealed: specs and release date

The new Volkswagen Tiguan R is on sale now, priced from £45,915. This high-performance SUV uses the same 320hp engine as the latest Volkswagen Golf R and is an alternative to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and the Cupra Formentor.
New VW Tiguan R price and release date
You can order the new Volkswagen Tiguan R now. It costs from £45,915 and comes as standard with 21-inch alloy wheels, sportier front and rear bumpers, matte chrome door mirror covers and four large rear exhaust tips. Just like in the VW Golf R, you can pay extra to have the standard exhaust replaced by a lighter (and louder) titanium Akraprovic item.
Inside, you get more supportive heated sports seats with a two-tone black and blue design and a new steering wheel with different gear-shift paddles, some R badging and an ‘R’ mode button. This lets you quickly put the car in its sportiest driving modes without having to faff your way through any touchscreen menus.
Other items you get as standard in the new Volkswagen Tiguan R include LED headlights, a digital driver’s display, keyless entry and 30-colour interior mood lighting.
New VW Tiguan R engine and performance
The new VW Tiguan R comes with the same 320hp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the recently revealed Golf R. It gets a similar four-wheel-drive system too, and the Golf R’s snappy seven-speed automatic gearbox has also found its way into the new Tiguan R.
This means the new hotted-up Tiguan R will accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. That’s faster than any other Tiguan ever and only two-tenths of a second slower than the all-new VW Golf R.
The new Tiguan R has pinched the Golf R’s torque-vectoring feature, too. This is a feature that helps the four-wheel-drive system send the engine’s power to the wheels that have the most grip, helping you make tighter turns at speed.
Compared with the standard Tiguan, the new Volkswagen Tiguan R’s suspension is 10mm lower. This should help stop its body leaning as much as the standard car’s in fast corners.
