This is the Volkswagen Golf eHybrid, a new plug-in hybrid version of the popular German hatchback. It’s the second plug-in version of the Ford Focus alternative, sitting below GTE in the line-up.

New Volkswagen Golf eHybrid engine

The Golf eHybrid uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked to an electric motor

This new Volkswagen Golf eHybrid uses a detuned version of the plug-in hybrid setup found in the Golf GTE. This sees a 1.4-litre petrol engine linked up to an electric motor to produce 204hp.

The eHybrid is said to be capable of 44 miles of electric-only driving

That’s sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, resulting in a 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds and a 137mph top speed.

Volkswagen claims the eHybrid can manage 235mpg — just make sure you plug it in often

The Golf eHybrid can run on electricity up to 80mph, so you’ll be able to cover motorways without using the petrol engine, with an all-electric range of 44 miles. Volkswagen says it’ll do 235mpg, though you’ll need to plug in a lot to get this.

New Volkswagen Golf eHybrid specs

The Golf eHybrid is available exclusively in Style trim

The Volkswagen Golf eHybrid is currently only available in Style trim. As standard, this sees a digital driver’s display and a 10-inch infotainment system fitted to the interior.

LED head- and tailights, plus 16-inch alloy wheels add a bit of, err, style to the outside too.

You’ll get driver aids like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and road sign recognition too.

New Volkswagen Golf eHybrid price and release date

Pricing for the Volkswagen Golf eHybrid kicks off at £32,995, making it the cheapest plug-in hybrid version of the hatchback you can currently get.

Orders are now being taken, with deliveries to follow imminently.
