A new turbo petrol engine and driving mode selector should help boost the appeal of the already impressive Skoda Octavia
The Skoda Octavia has been treated to a minor mid-life refresh. The spacious budget family car has become slightly more tempting courtesy of a new frugal petrol engine and a driving mode selector for more powerful models. Check out our list of the best family cars with big boots.
Skoda Octavia driving and engines
A new 1.0-litre petrol engine marks the new entry point to the Octavia lineup. Replacing the existing 1.2-litre version, the three-cylinder unit produces 113hp and 148lb ft of torque courtesy of a turbocharger. It’s a unit we’ve tried in the Volkswagen Golf, where we found it to be smooth and refined. When combined with an optional seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, the 1.0-litre accelerates to 62mph from rest in 9.9 seconds, while the standard manual takes 9.6 seconds. Estate models take 0.2 seconds longer.
Based on Skoda’s claims, it should be frugal, too. Fuel consumption has improved by eight per cent compared to the 1.2 it replaces, with DSG-equipped models achieving 62.8mpg. An optional eco-minded package, featuring of lowered suspension, low rolling resistance tyres, active aero flaps and a roof spoiler, increases that figure to 64.2mpg.
Further up the Octavia range, all models that produce more than 148hp are now equipped with Dynamic Chassis Control as standard. DCC allows drivers to choose from among three driving modes (Comfort, Normal or Sport) that alter throttle response, steering sensitivity and suspension settings depending on the driver’s preference.

Elsewhere, a couple of minor changes should make the Octavia a little easier to live with every day. Infotainment systems fitted to top-spec Octavias will offer integrated WiFi, while some of its functions can now be controlled via a mobile app. A wireless charging mat for smartphones is optionally available, along a Skoda umbrella mounted below the front passenger seat.
