The latest 320hp Volkswagen Golf R gets the estate treatment, keeping that car’s 320hp 2.0-litre engine and four-wheel drive, but taking boot space up to 611 litres. Read on for full details.

This is the brand new Volkswagen Golf R Estate – the even more dog- and luggage-friendly version of the ever-popular Golf R hot hatch.
As a more potent alternative to the Ford Fiesta ST, this Golf R Estate retains the performance of its smaller stablemate but benefits from a decent boost in boot space.
New Volkswagen Golf R Estate design
To no real surprise, the Volkswagen Golf R Estate gets the same visual upgrades as the standard Golf R hatchback.
That means a huge blacked-out lower grille at the front with a subtle blue strip between the LED headlights, with extended side skirts down the side.
You get 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, though you can switch them out for a set of 19-inch wheels if you’re happy to pay a bit extra.
The new VW Golf R Estate keeps the standard Golf R’s diffuser and quad-exit exhaust at the back, though the obvious change here is the extended roofline and alternative tail lights taken from the regular Golf Estate.
New Volkswagen Golf R Estate interior and boot space
The literal biggest change to the Golf R in its Estate guise is the boot space. It’s up to 611 litres from 374 litres — matching the rest of the Estate line-up. The Golf R Estate’s four-wheel-drive system hasn’t eaten into the available boot space.
Otherwise, the interior of the Golf R Estate is about the same as the hatchback. There are very few physical buttons because the 10-inch infotainment system controls most of the car’s functions. There’s another 10-inch driver’s display in place of analogue dials, too.
Sports seats come as standard too, with options including three-zone climate control and a panoramic roof available.
New Volkswagen Golf R Estate engine and performance
The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Volkswagen Golf R hatch is carried over unchanged here, meaning it’s still good for 320hp and 420Nm.
That’s delivered to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, with the result a 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds and a 168mph top speed if you opt for the Performance Pack (it’s capped at 155mph otherwise.)
As standard, the Golf R Estate gets Dynamic Chassis Control system which can be used to put the car in more comfortable modes for when you are using it to take the dog out for a run, or sportier settings including a Nurburgring-specific mode. Ideal if Pluto fancies a lap of the famous ‘Green Hell’ race circuit before his usual trip to the park.
New Volkswagen Golf R Estate price and release date
Pricing has yet to be revealed for the new Volkswagen Golf R Estate, but it’ll be on sale in August so keep your eyes peeled.
It’s likely to start around the £41,000 mark, which is slightly more than the £39,445 Golf R hatchback.
