New BMW M4 CS spotted: price, specs and release date

The billowing clouds of tyre smoke have hardly settled from the arrival of the new BMW M4 Competition, yet BMW has already been testing an even more potent version of its latest sporty coupe. The new model is rumoured to be a lighter and more focused CS variant of the current model.

New BMW M4 CS design

The BMW M4 Competition has received a largely mixed reception since its launch, due in no small part to its controversial grille design.

While it is clear that no changes have been made in this area on the camouflaged M4 CS test car, the deeper front splitter, more aggressive side skirts and an integrated upswept rear spoiler all give the car a far more purposeful look.

There are massive brake discs peeking out from behind the large alloy wheels which clearly point to this being either a more track-focussed variant of the current M4 Competition.

If so, then you should also see some serious weight-saving measures such as a lighter bonnet and boot lid made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, as was the case with the previous M4 CS. These measures will help reduce the portly weight of the new model and sharpen up its handling even further.

New BMW M4 CS engines and driving

The latest BMW M4 is all about numbers, big ones. Producing 510hp from its twin-turbo 3.0-litre engine, the Competition variant (the only model currently on offer in the UK) gets from 0-60mph in just 3.9-seconds thanks to the grippy M sport differential and quick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox.

These power figures are already up on the previous BMW M4 CS – which offered 460hp. Add to this a significant reduction in weight and the new M4 CS should reach 60mph from rest even more quickly than the standard car.

Judging from the specs of the recently released BMW M5 CS, the M4 CS could possibly produce around 530hp, handily leaving some headroom for even more extreme variants in the future. A retuned suspension system and more vocal exhaust system will quite likely be part of the upcoming CS package as well.

The upcoming BMW M4 CS should feature subtle changes over the M4 Competition, such as bespoke lightweight front seats, CS badging and an Alcantara-clad steering wheel. The infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital driver display should be carried over unchanged save for a few CS-specific performance settings and new graphics.

Don’t expect the option to delete the infotainment system and rear seats just yet – that may well be reserved for track-focused variants as was the case with the previous BMW M4 GTS.

New BMW M4 CS price and release date

BMW hasn’t dropped any clues regarding the new M4 CS’s price, but if the newly introduced BMW M5 CS is anything to go by you can expect a price hike of around £25,000 to £30,000 over today’s £76,115 BMW M4 Competition.

That would push the M4 CS into the crosshairs of some very capable sports cars such as the Porsche 911. No release date has been announced yet but it’s likely the finished car will be officially unveiled later in 2021 and go on sale in 2022.
