Not that long ago if you wanted a luxury SUV you were limited to a Range Rover or maybe a Mercedes, but now some traditional luxury and sports car makers are getting in on the act – the likes of Aston Martin, Bentley and Rolls-Royce are making some seriously sumptuous SUVs. 1. BMW X7
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so they say, but most beholders seem to be in agreement that the BMW X7 is… imposing. Some might be less complimentary. Nevertheless, everything becomes considerably more subtle when you move inside, because the interior is beautiful and the iDrive infotainment is superb. There’s space for seven adults, and when all the seats are in use the X7 still has the luggage capacity of a VW Polo. The 30d diesel is the best all-rounder because it’s strong and comparatively economical.

2. Range Rover
There’s a reason Range Rovers are used by royalty the world over – they’re supremely luxurious and capable in almost every situation. Every Range Rover is filled with the highest-quality leather, plush carpets and classy metals. The three-screen infotainment set-up is good, albeit a little behind the BMW X7’s iDrive system. Still, there’s loads of space for five people and their stuff. If you spend most of your time in town, the 3.0-litre petrol or plug-in hybrid might also be worth a look. Shame there’s no seven-seat option though.

3. Bentley Bentayga
The Bentley Bentayga makes BMW X7s and Range Rovers look just a little common, dahling. With good reason, the interior is the very epitome of luxury, with high-grade leather, expensive wood and classy metal trims everywhere. It even smells expensive. Just try not to look at the bits lifted from the Audi parts bin too closely. The 6.0-litre W12 engine gives the Bentayga a feeling of acceleration that will make you giggle, and the air suspension keeps you completely isolated from what’s happening to the tyres.

4. Mercedes G-Class
Few cars have the presence of the Mercedes G-Class – paint it black and it’s a Bond baddy’s dream. Its off-road abilities are matched by very few, and it manages to be comfortable on the road, too. The G350d feels ideal for off-roading, but it’ll struggle to hit 25mpg. Or there’s the twin-turbo V8, which gives the G63 almost comedic pace. It sounds like Satan gargling broken glass, too. The square body has vast space for five adults (not seven), who will be wrapped in the lap of luxury, but getting in and out can be tricky.

5. Mercedes GLS
The Mercedes GLS is marketed as the S-Class of SUVs, so you can rest assured that it’s a bit posh. It’s a bit big, too, which makes it tricky to park in a normal space. Inside, it’s all about the opulence, because there’s a huge one-piece screen for the dials and infotainment, as well as luxury leather, metals and plastic. That said, some cheaper plastics lower down are a bit disappointing. There’s space for seven adults, and they’ll be moved around quite briskly by the 330hp 3.0-litre V6 diesel. Everything else is focused on comfort, not performance, which is in keeping with what you want.

6. Tesla Model X
The wow feeling of “that’s cool” starts when you open the ‘falcon wing’ rear doors of the Tesla Model X. They swivel upwards from the centre of the roof on electric motors. Talking of electric motors, even the cheaper Long Range model can sprint from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds, while the Performance version does it in 2.7. Plug it into a Tesla ‘supercharger’ and you’ll top up the batteries from 0-80% in around 40 minutes. There’s space inside for up to seven people (just) but just beware that the interior quality isn’t as high as you’d hope.

7. Lamborghini Urus
The Lamborghini Urus is indicative of today’s world, because it’s an SUV that won’t actually get you very far off-road. However, its on-road performance is what you’d hope for in a Lamborghini – it’s one of the quickest SUVs out there. The 650hp twin-turbo V8 gets it from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and it’ll go on to 190mph. Active roll bars, four-wheel steering and various driving modes help the Urus feel genuinely quite nimble. However, practicality is not a forte, because you can have your Urus with either five seats (reasonable space) or four seats (lots more space).

8. Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Balmoral Castle with wheels – that pretty much sums up the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It is roomy, as you’d expect, and you can have your rear seat area with Lounge or Individual packages. The Individual pack replaces the centre seat with a drinks cabinet and a fridge. As you do. The four-wheel drive and various driving modes give the Cullinan some off-road talents, and the ability to wade through 50cm of water. As for extras, well Rolls-Royce can cater for pretty much every need, as long as your wallet is deep enough.

9. Audi SQ7
The Audi SQ7 is like that friend who’s always been safe, quiet and sensible, then decides to hit the gym and take a few steroids. So, under the SQ7’s bonnet sits a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine that generates 507hp. Inside, it’s much the same as you’ll find in a lesser Q7, only with more supportive sports seats and a flat-bottomed wheel. However, that means you get all the extra performance with the Q7’s great practicality intact. Just beware that for all the pace, the SQ7 isn’t actually much fun to drive.
