Audi A4 interior

You’ll love climbing into the Audi A4 each morning – the quality of its interior is fantastic. Its infotainment system is great too, but BMW’s iDrive continues to be even easier to use.

Style

The Audi A4's MMI infotainment touchscreen

Everything in the Audi A4’s cabin is simple, intuitive and stylish. It’s not quite as sporty as the Jaguar XE’s wraparound design or quite as eye-catching as that in a Mercedes C-Class, but the Audi’s numerous aluminium and soft-plastic trims look classy and feel absolutely bulletproof. No other car this size is quite as well built as the Audi A4.

Everything you’ll touch regularly – from the standard leather-trimmed steering wheel to the metal switches on the dashboard – feel a class above what you’ll find in a BMW or Mercedes. You even get posh soft-close lids on the Audi A4’s various storage trays and cubby holes.

To complement all these plush, upmarket trims you’d expect leather seats to be standard, right? Unfortunately not – they’re an option on entry-level Technik models. However, next-level up Sport trim comes with full leather seats, along with ambient interior lighting.

Sportier S Line cars come with stainless steel pedals, brushed-aluminium dash trims, contrasting stitching and more supportive leather and suede-like Alcantara sports seats while Black Edition versions add a flat-bottomed steering wheel and – you guessed it – black interior trims.

Splash out for a range-topping Vorsprung car and you get electrically-adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats and an opening sunroof as standard.

Audi A4 Technik interior
The base A4 doesn’t come with leather seats – the Technik has cloth chairs with manual adjustment. They are at least heated, though, and you get lumbar support, a 10.1-inch display screen on the dash and a high-quality interior with Aluminium trim pieces.

Audi A4 Sport Edition interior
Sport trim comes with leather seats, along with LED ambient interior lighting – but in every other way it’s the same as the lower-spec Technik model.

Audi A4 S Line interior
Sportier A4 S Line cars come with stainless steel pedals, brushed-aluminium dash trims, contrasting stitching and more supportive leather and suede-like Alcantara sports seats. There’s also perforated leather on trim such as the gear shifter.

Audi A4 Black Edition interior
Black Edition versions add a flat-bottomed steering wheel and – you guessed it – black interior trims. Otherwise, though, it’s the same as the S Line inside.

Audi A4 Vorsprung interior
Splash out for a range-topping Vorsprung car and you get electrically adjustable front seats, heated front and rear seats and an opening sunroof as standard. It also features extra LED interior lighting, more leather, wireless phone charging, an upgraded stereo and Oak trim in certain places.

Infotainment

The Audi A4's MMI infotainment touchscreen

Every Audi A4 comes with a bright, high-definition 10-inch widescreen atop its dashboard. It might look a little like an afterthought, but it comes with DAB radio, Bluetooth, built-in sat-nav and – unlike in a BMW 3 Series – Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

That’s all the features ticked, but what about using it? Well, Audi’s old MMI and BMW’s iDrive are easier to use while driving because both have a handy rotary dial rather than relying solely on touch, but there’s still lots to like about Audi’s latest MMI system. Its colourful menus are easy to follow, sticking in a destination on the sat-nav is a doddle and it responds quickly to your inputs.

Also standard are Audi’s brilliant Virtual Cockpit digital dials. It’s a 12.3-inch display that replaces conventional analogue speedo and rev-counter dials with a configurable screen, and at the press of a button, it can display full-screen sat-nav directions alongside neat digital dials. Not only are they easy to use, but they also look fantastic, lifting the A4’s cabin even further.

And there’s good news for audiophiles too. The A4’s standard 10-speaker sound system is good, but for the best sound experience you’ll want the 20-speaker, 755W Bang & Olufsen Premium sound system that’s standard on range-topping Vorsprung models, but optional as part of Audi’s Comfort and Sound pack across the rest of the range.
